Run. Walk. Bike. Swim. Starting May 6, the Platte County Health Department (PCHD) will be hosting its six week “Get Up and Move!” event. The event focuses on movement and lasts May 5 through June 15. “Physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle,” PCHD Health Educator Stacy Benninghoff said. “When combined with healthy eating, it can help prevent a range of chronic diseases. This is a fun competitive way to get Platte Citians thinking about including some type of movement into their daily lifestyles.” And, Benninghoff noted, it is a jumping off point for people to realize adopting a healthy lifestyle is as much a community effort as an individual one, requiring the support of family and friends. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bone, muscle and joint development and decreases the risk of obesity. With the six week challenge, participants choose how to track miles: walk, run, bike or swim. Participants will receive a motivational email weekly and their total miles are due June 10. Prizes include an iPod shuffle and $50 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift cards. Registration required (for prizes and weekly email). To register, email Stacy.Benninghoff@plattehealth.com.
