A Kansas City man faces four felony charges in Platte County for alleged sexual abuse against two daughters of his ex-girlfriend.
Robert F. Seaton, 44, could life in prison on three of the counts — two of statutory sodomy and one for statutory rape of a person less than 12 years old. A Class D felony of child molestation carries a potential punishment of up to five years. The alleged crimes took place between approximately 2008 and 2011 but were not reported to authorities until Nov. 26, 2013 despite the mother of the children previously being aware of the alleged incidents. According to a probable cause statement, the abuse occurred while Seaton and the unnamed woman were living together in the Willow Lake Apartments in southern Platte County, located on NW 61st Street. They were together for about 10 years and regularly smoked crack together at the time. The woman’s 13-year-old daughter alleges various acts took place, including oral sex and vaginal intercourse, when she was between the ages of 8 and 11. She alleged that Seaton threatened to hurt her mother if she told of the abuse. The first victim said she first told her mother about Seaton’s actions when she was approximately 10 years old but that her mother “did not believe her.” A Kansas City Police detective contacted the first victim’s 17-year-old sister, and she also alleged abuse from Seaton. She said “the same thing” happened to her but declined to provide specific details to investigators. In a formal statement, the girls’ mother said she first became aware of the abuse in 2012 and that the initial disclosure went unnoticed. Seaton remains in custody on a $50,000 cash-only bond. His initial appearance in Platte County court is set for Sept. 15.
