Park Hill lands 6 on all-state football teams; PC's Kilkenny makes both lists

BRYCE MERENESS/Citizen file photo Park Hill senior offensive lineman Joe Tuimauga (72) clears a path for a runner during a Missouri Class 5 quarterfinal against Fort Osage on Nov. 14 at Park Hill District Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Park Hill won 21-20 to advance to the semifinals for the second time in school history. The Trojans 12-1 record tied them for the most wins in the program’s history. Park Hill garnered five selections on the Missouri media all-state teams, released Tuesday, Dec. 16, and finished the season ranked No. 3 in Class 5 behind state champion Battle and runner-up Nixa.

Offensive linemen Joe Tuimauga and Anthony Enriquez — both seniors — were first-team selections for the Trojans along with senior linebacker Carter Anchors. Defensive lineman Chester Graves and kicker/ quarterback Parker Sampson — both sophomores — made the second team.

Despite a few serious injuries, Park Hill (12-1) reached the Class 5 semifinals and lost to Nixa.

Tuimauga and Enriquez were part of a unit that blocked for an offense that accrued 5,012 yards of total offense this season, including 3,812 rushing, while Sampson made 6-of-8 field goals (long of 41 yards) and 52-of-58 extra points in addition to a brief stint at quarterback in the Trojans’ 21-20 quarterfinal win against Fort Osage. He attempted and completed one pass for one yard and also booted the game-winning extra point from 30 yards out following a penalty after Park Hill’s final touchdown.

Anchors, also named the Suburban League Red Division defensive player of the year, made 66½ tackles — 14 for loss — to go with three forced fumbles, two recoveries and one interception on a stout linebacking corps. Two of the forced fumbles came against Fort Osage.

Platte County senior linebacker Topher Kilkenny made the second team in Class 4 after helping the Pirates go 9-2 and earn a part of a three-way share of the Suburban League Blue Division crown. He finished with a team-high 76 tackles (20 for loss) and grabbed two interceptions while recording a team-high six passes defensed. The Pirates received six points in the final set of state rankings but dropped from ninth to the first team out of the rankings after losing to Smithville in the Class 4 District 8 semifinals.

Shepardson, a junior, made appearances on the Missouri media and Missouri Football Coaches Association all-state teams

West Platte ended up with a pair of second-team selections in Class 1 after finishing 8-4 with a loss in the Class 1 District 7 championship game to Plattsburg.

Tanner Lintner, a senior, made a repeat appearance at offensive line. He helped the Bluejays pile up 3,775 yards rushing despite a litany of injuries that forced them to use a multitude of running backs and switch quarterbacks for the postseason. Junior linebacker Brett Shepardson also made the list after a breakout season on defense that included 101 tackles (17 for loss), four sacks, three forced fumbles, three recoveries, two interceptions and two touchdowns.

West Platte dropped out of the top 10 following its second loss of Plattsburg but received one vote in the final poll.

The Missouri Football Coaches Association also recently released its all-state teams, and seven area players made the cut. The MFCA selects three teams compared to two for the media teams, which are selected from voting members throughout the state.

Park Hill running back Matt Harris made the MFCA second team after rushing for a team-high 1,272 yards and 13 touchdowns. A junior selected Red Division offensive player of the year, he took over lead duties in Week 5 when senior running back Kenyatte Harris suffered a leg injury which kept him out for the majority of the Trojans’ run to the semifinals.

Kenyatte Harris ended up with more than 1,000 yards of total offense and 16 total touchdowns.

Park Hill South senior Tanner McClaran made the third team as a tight end. He recorded team-highs of 45 catches and 721 yards to go with five touchdowns for the Panthers, who finished 3-7 with a loss in the first round of the Class 5 District 8 tournament to Liberty.

Platte County senior wide receiver Aliek Reed made the second team in Class 4, while fellow senior Tyler Cooper was on the third team at tight end, a position not specifically included by the media. Reed finished with 29 catches for team-highs of 793 yards and 10 touchdowns despite facing consistent double- and triple-coverage late in the season. Cooper had 29 catches, as well, while splitting time as a starting defensive end.

West Platte also had a pair of players exclusive to the coaches list — seniors Cody Guthrie and Conner Salmons.

Second-team as an all-purpose offensive player, Guthrie finished with team-highs of 156 attempts, 1,406 yards and 18 TDs rushing. He mostly served as a first-year starting quarterback before breaking his non-throwing hand in the regular-season finale — a loss to Lawson.

Guthrie also went 51-for-114 for 920 yards and another 10 TDs through the air despite limited trick-play passing opportunities in West Platte’s final three games.

Salmons — Guthrie’s main target — also made the second team with 35 catches, 733 yards and eight touchdowns. His production also slowed in the postseason due to Guthrie’s injury, which forced West Platte to rotate quarterbacks between Ben Heili — a 5-foot-6 wide receiver and 2013 all-state selection at defensive back — and Shepardson, who rotated between offensive tackle and under center in the postseason. He also played some fullback at points this season and finished with 626 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground.
