A service intended to help the public has become so much of an eyesore that Platte County Community Center North might have to stop offering it.
Illegal dumping of materials in and around four recycling bins located on the property has workers and Platte County officials upset. Recently, two televisions, a mattress and a large safe were piled on top of discarded wet carpet in the back parking lot of the YMCA facility located on Running Horse Road in Platte City. Last week, more carpeting and a large bucket of springs were left on the sit.
Due to recent heavy rains, some of the items could not be cleaned up immediately, work that takes up time of community center employees even in normal conditions.
If the unwanted deposits of trash don’t stop, officials will have to consider discontinuing the recycling service, which is part of the current trash service the community center has contracted with Deffenbaugh Industries. The dumping has been ongoing for a while and has now reached a breaking point.
Citizens are encouraged to utilize the bins for newspapers, office paper, junk mail, magazines, cardboard, plastic containers (Nos. 1-7) and aluminum cans. However, the bins are not intended for glass, plastic bags, shredded papers, books, food waste or paper towels, plates and cups.
If the bins are at full at the community center, there are six located in the Platte City Middle School parking lot also for use.
