South’s Jackson, Courtney highlight local quintet of all-state performers

Park Hill finished with the postseason bragging rights, but Park Hill South claimed the better spots on the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state teams, released Sunday, June 14. Four players from the district rivals earned Class 4 honors, while Platte County junior Brooke Zenner made the cut in Class 3.

Both players made the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state teams, released this week.

Park Hill South, which finished 19-5 with a loss to Park Hill in a sectional matchup, put both of its Division I-bound seniors onto the first team, while the Trojans were rewarded with a pair of spots on the second team and the No. 7 ranking in the final poll. Park Hill went 19-7-3 and lost in the state quarterfinals 2-0 to eventual state champion St. Teresa’s Academy.

Shay Jackson, a Florida Gulf Coast signee, scored 35 goals in her senior campaign to set a Park Hill South season record and earn Suburban Conference Red Division offensive player of the year honors. The diminutive forward made the second team as a junior and finished her career with 89 goals — second on the school’s all-time list.

Anna Courtney, who will play at the University of Kansas next year, scored 16 goals and added 13 assists. She made the honorable mention list as a junior but developed into the league’s overall player of the year as a senior.

Jenna Winebrenner, a sophomore defender, headed up Park Hill’s stingy defense. She made the second team for a second straight year after a diverse campaign. In addition to helping the Trojans to 16 shutouts, Winebrenner scored seven goals to go with nine assists.

Bella Catano, a junior midfielder, also made the second team for Park Hill after tallying 10 goals and 10 assists. Catano scored the golden goal in a 1-0 win for the Trojans against Park Hill South in a Class 4 sectional matchup — the first playoff meeting between the two teams in history. They split two regular season games played three days apart to close the regular season before both went on to claim district titles and playoff spots.

In its first playoff trip since 2006, Park Hill advanced to its first quarterfinal since taking fourth in class 2A in 1993.

Zenner earned honorable mention honors in Class 3 after leading Platte County with 21 goals and 17 assists. Her biggest effort came with all of the goals in a 4-2 upset of St. Joseph Central in the North Kansas City Tournament.

Most often deployed as a forward, Zenner — verbally committed to Missouri State — led the Pirates to a second-place finish in the Suburban

Conference Blue Division and to the Class 3 District 16 title game. They lost 3-0 to Smithville, marking the fifth straight time the Warriors knocked the Pirates out of the postseason in a district title game.

Zenner becomes the first Platte County player to earn a spot on the all-state teams since Kristen Clemens in 2013.
