Parker Amos has been stepping it up for the Platte County boys’ golf team so far this season.
With cold and windy conditions, Platte County pulled out an early season victory at Paradise Point Golf Course when the Pirates matched up with Oak Park and came out on top on April 6. The Pirates finished with 194 strokes and the Northmen ended with 224 strokes when Amos didn’t let the weather conditions phase him, becoming a medal winner once again when he finished with 42 strokes.
“It was good to get a victory under our belt for the season,” Platte County head golf coach Trevor Short said. “We’re starting to play a little more consistently and battling the weather at the same time, but it’s a good opportunity to play in these types of conditions to better prepare ourselves for any future events that have similar conditions.”
Jackson Gabbert and Dylan Mitchell tied with 50, while Jake Kingery was right behind the Platte County duo with 51. Carson Childers finished the day with 56 strokes.
“We’re having success with certain aspects from each player and gaining more experience every time we are on the course. We’re starting to see some changes to the lineup to see what is our best combination of players to produce quality scores,” Short said.
Platte County struggled in its next match, finishing in 12th place out of 14 teams, on another day of tough weather at Tiffany Greens Golf Course on April 7. Amos tied St. Joseph Central’s Jaxon Nurski for tenth place with 80 strokes.
Childers finished in 45th place with 94 strokes, while Kingery was in a 3-way tie in 50th place with 98 strokes. Mitchell ended the day with 102 strokes, right ahead of Gabbert who finished with 104 strokes.
“The team battled very tough conditions on the course today. The wind was constantly gusting all day with very cold temperatures added into the mix,” Short said.
In the Pirates’ last meet, they took second place at Paradise Point Golf Course on April 11. Amos finished in second place with 79 strokes. Kingery tied for 16th place with 89 strokes, while Gabbert and Mitchell tied for 26th place with 91 strokes.
“We took advantage of finally having some decent weather to play in today and put together scores that drove us into second place. We’re starting to be a little more consistent with our scoring and are getting better as the season is progressing,” Short said.
