Dogs of any size or shape from the Platte City and Weston area are invited to the annual Doggie Splash pool party Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Wollman Aquatic Center in Leavenworth, Kan.
Non-aggressive large and small dogs can attend. There will be a small dogs swim session from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., a large dogs session from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. and a second large dogs session from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
Nancy Baker, recreation supervisor for aquatics, special events and fitness at Leavenworth Parks & Rec said if small dogs are fond of big dogs they are welcome to attend the big dog session and if big dogs feel more comfortable with smaller ones they can join the small dogs.
“Anyone can attend the Doggie Splash,” Baker said. “Last year 120 dogs attended. People love this fundraiser for several reasons. It raises money for improvements to our dog park and it’s a great way to end the summer and watch your dog enjoy swimming and playing with other dogs.”
Only one dog per person can attend and humans cannot join the canines in the pool. Children under the age of 10 are not allowed to attend without an adult present.
Until dogs are inside the pool area, they must be leashed while on all park premises. They must have current rabies shots and all vaccines as required by law. Aggressive dogs that exhibit vicious, fierce or dangerous behavior are not permitted at any time in the area.
Attendees must pick up after their dog both inside and outside the pool area and must ensure their dog is not left unattended or out of sight range and must be maintained under voice control at all times.
The cost for the event is $5 and it’s payable at the door.
Sponsored by Leavenworth Parks & Recreation, the event will benefit Leavenworth’s Waggin’ Tails Dog Park. The Leavenworth Off-Leash Dog Park is a public park built specifically for pet owners and their dogs for recreation, socialization and exercise.
In 2007, a small group of volunteers began raising the money needed to build the park. In the next three years $30,000 was donated from area citizens, memorials and fundraising events. In 2010 a grand opening ceremony opened the park to the public. The park is available for dogs from any location and has play equipment, waste bags and waste stations, watering stations and benches.
