While Park Hill dominated the dual on Tuesday, Sept. 4, Platte County’s Alex Beall stole the headline.
The senior broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke that has stood since 2006. His time of 55.16 easily broke the previous mark held by Chad Stephenson of 56.10.
“It means a lot … when I joined this team my freshman year, I was one of the worst swimmers on the team,” Beall said. “I had never played a sport or anything. Having these guys around me motivates me to be my best every day.
“When I got my record, I looked up and saw all my friends cheering, I thought I got a good time, but I broke the record by a second. I kind of like to see that (again).”
Last year, he pulled within four-tenths seconds off the record and made a goal to break it this season. Now his goal to reset the record before the season is over.
The record is the second for Beall, who was part of a record-breaking medley relay team last fall. That mark was set in 2015.
Stephenson’s record was one of the longest-standing mark still around.
“I hope my record doesn’t stand that long. I hope we have someone on this team that can beat it,” Beall said. “I seen people who I hope that can get better than I am. A record standing that long is kind of crazy.
“If you would’ve told me freshman or sophomore year, I don’t think anyone on the team would’ve believed you. I used to not be able to do a push up. I’ve came a little way since then.”
Beall accounted for two of the Pirates’ three victories against the Trojans. He also took first place in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:10.95 — winning by four seconds. Baxter Stone won the 100 breaststroke for the Platte County.
The Trojans swept all three of the relays: 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 freestyle. The Trojans outscored the Pirates, 182-116.
Sam Duesterhaus, Alex Dunlevy, Nick Dieffenbach and Hunter Dieffenbach finished in 1:45.80 to win the 200 medley. The Deiffenbachs, Duesterhaus and Ray Fugett took first in the 400 freestyle with a 13-second victory.
Dunlevy, Fugett, Jacob Fickenscher and Trevor Stammler took a four-second win in the 200 freestyle.
Dunlevy’s third first-place finish came when he won the 100 freestyle in 51.22. Duesterhaus’s third first place came by winning the 100 butterfly.
Nick Dieffenbach won the 200 freestyle — his third first-place showing — while Fugett’s third winning finish came in the 50 freestyle.
Patrick Lee won the 500 freestyle for the Trojans, giving them eight wins in the dual.
