Best BBQ in KC is in Platte County: Scott’s Kitchen and Catering at Hangar 29 ahead of Joe’s KC

A local Platte County catering business can claim having the best barbecue in Kansas City, according to Travel & Leisure magazine.

The list of “The 25 Best Places for Barbecue in the U.S.” was compiled from reviews and star ratings on Yelp, excluding large chain restaurants and limiting states to no more than two selections.

The Kansas City metro area led the way with two in the top 25, all of those separated by two spots in the rankings.

Scott’s Kitchen and Catering at Hangar 29 stands at No. 20 and Joe’s Kansas City’s B-B-Que in Kansas City, Kan., was named No. 22.

Scott’s Kitchen owner Scott Umschied told The Citizen was excited by the news.

Scott and Dana Umscheid opened Scott’s Kitchen and Catering at Hangar 29 on NW Ambassador Drive in central Platte County last year. The company was recently named the best barbecue location in the Kansas City metro area by Travel & Leisure magazine.

“To be honest with you, when I first saw the list I was shocked,” Umschied said. “I sort of sat there looking at my phone in disbelief. Then I screamed the loudest ‘woohoo!’ and shared our good news with my team. We were all smiling and high-fiving —lots of emotions, actually.”

Umschied said he appreciates the dedication of his team to food quality and standards of service.

“It’s rare these days to have such a group working along side you, sharing your dreams, being passionate about the business and celebrating the successes,” he said.

The community has been very supportive, he said, and over the past year social media and word of mouth has spread the word of Scott’s Kitchen.

Also in the top 25 was St. Louis-area His and Hers BBQ in Dardenne Prairie, ranked at No. 18. The top 25, for those wondering, started with Prunedale Market in Salinas, Calif.

Scott’s Kitchen and Catering, located at 11920 N. Ambassador Drive near the Kansas City International Airport, opened in July 2017.

It has a five-star rating on Yelp in its short time in business.

The Platte County establishment also was named to ‘The Best Burritos in All 50 States’ by Food & Wine magazine recently. His burritos were cited for the use of burnt ends with scrambled eggs, queso fresco and salsa.

“It is everything you ever wanted in a breakfast burrito. Nothing more, nothing less,” the magazine stated.
