Coming off a 9-11 campaign with a 4-3 KCI Conference record, the West Platte baseball team will look to make the most out of its relatively small roster of 12 players.
The Blue Jays will be relying on their senior duo of Ezra Stigman and Xavier Reynolds, who earned all-conference and all-district honors. West Platte will have a solid incoming freshman class that includes Alex Allison, Drake Montez, Jhett Chandler and Mathew Cook.
“We may be young, but that’s just an opportunity to grow and get better faster,” West Platte head baseball coach Greg Reynolds said. “We want to grow quickly into a team that competes in a tough conference.”
Juniors Cohen Kite and Gunnar Smith are two of the four returning starters from a team that graduated a talented senior class last spring. In 2021, West Platte started off 7-4 before losing six of its last eight.
“We want to finish in the top half of the conference and compete for a district title. To do that we need to build a solid defense, throw strikes and put the ball in play,” Reynolds said.
Sophomores Kane Cogan and Jaxon Turner are also looking to contribute to a squad that hasn’t had a winning record since finishing 10-8 in 2019. West Platte won six district titles from 2010 to 2016, but hasn’t won one since and is desperate to end that drought.
