Blue Jays end regular season with tough conference loss

WESTON – The West Platte football team (3-6) lost four of its last five game of the regular season to slip down to the No. 7 seed in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament.

West Platte will enter the postseason with three tallies in the win column for the second straight season. The Blue Jays’ defense has allowed 42.1 points per game so far and gave up a scoring drive in all but one series in the 64-20 loss to Penney (5-4) on Oct. 20.

West Platte fell behind early and went into the locker room down 37-6. The Hornets scored on every drive on the night except for the last one of the first half when they ran out of time.

Kane Cogan had a 1-yard rushing touchdown for the only first half West Platte score. Brady McMillan scored the Blue Jays’ two second half touchdowns when they got outscored 27-14.

West Platte has struggled to take care of the football throughout the year, but only had one turnover on the night – an interception by Cogan. McMillan ran five times for 56 yards to find the end zone twice on offense, while leading the team in tackles with 10 on defense.

Dominic Williams erupted for 122 receiving yards on only three catches, making up for a majority of Cogan’s 149 passing yards. The Blue Jays ended with 149 yards on the ground.

West Platte is in the Class 1 District 3 Tournament and will look to earn its first postseason win since 2021. Districts is a bit different this year, with a play-in game for the bottom seed for the first week.

West Platte will have two weeks of practice to get ready to head 122 miles to Windsor (6-3) on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. If the Blue Jays knock off the No. 2 seed, they will play the winner of third-seeded Polo (6-3) and sixth-seeded Skyline (1-8) on Nov. 10.
