Blue Jays hit the mat

PLATTSBURG – West Platte competed alongside Lone Jack and Plattsburg in a triangular at Plattsburg High School on Dec. 5.

The West Platte girls watch the boys compete in an early season triangular.

The West Platte boys and girls both fell short but had some positives come from it. The Blue Jays lost 42-37 to the Mules and 36-30 to the Tigers.

“Several of our wrestlers earned their first career wins tonight, including sophomore and first year wrestler James Schlute who had a win by fall over Plattsburg,” West Platte head wrestling coach Brett Swope said. “The boys still have three wrestlers with an undefeated record.”

Early into this season, Cuin Vincent is 4-0, Jhett Chandler is 5-0 and Matthew Haynes is 4-0. Canton Wilkins (120), Vincent (126), Chandler (138), Henry Bargmann (165), Schulte (175), Haynes (215) and Sam Newcomb (150) all earned wins against Lone Jack.

The match against Plattsburg was just as close and West Platte led 18-3 early thanks to pins by Vincent and Chandler and forfeited victory by Colton DePetre in the 132-weight class.

The Tigers responded with five consecutive match wins – four pins and one decision – to push the score to 30-18 in their favor. Garett Moritz (175) won by fall and Haynes earned a win by forefeit to tie the Tigers, but Newcomb was pinned in 27 seconds to decide the true victor.

The West Platte girls lost 18-12 to Lone Jack and 42-0 to Plattsburg – leaving five weight classes empty, resulting in forfeits. There were five total wrestlers between the Lady Blue Jays and the Lady Mules, with each score being a forfeit.

There were three matchups that actually happened against Plattsburg, with West Platte losing all three. Addison Bailey lost on a 10-8 decision in the 120-weight class.

Hana Hoover also lost in a decision, albeit a 6-4 score, in the 135-weight class. Emily Haynes (145) was pinned in 1:02 in the 42-0 loss.
