Residents in Ferrelview recently expressed concerns about the structural integrity of what they believed was a storm shelter at the Ferrelwoods Mobile Home Park.
At the June meeting of the board of trustees, board chair Phil Gilliam said he had received a complaint from a resident about the condition of the storm shelter, only to learn the structure was not a storm shelter at all, according to trustee Theresa Wilson.
A Ferrelwoods resident told Gilliam that water was running down the steps of the supposed storm shelter and questioned the safety of the structure. Wilson said she was aware of foundation problems with the structure, but that it had never been intended to serve as a storm shelter. It was, instead, a shower house for a proposed community pool that had never been installed.
While Missouri statute required mobile home parks to provide shower facilities, the board wasn’t sure if a storm shelter was required. Wilson said the trailer park’s previous owners told her a storm shelter wasn’t required. The board agreed to look into the state statutes regulating such shelters.
Also at the June meeting, the board discussed how to handle snakes coming from the creek due to the heavy rainfall. Trustees disagreed over shooting the snakes, with Gilliam stating dangerous snakes could be shot, but the body should be retained to show law enforcement. Wilson said firearms shouldn’t be discharged within the village and residents could use a pellet gun instead.
