LAWSON – Having an opportunity to win back-to-back games for the first time this season to get over .500, the West Platte football team (2-3) had a rough go at it in its first road KCI matchup of the year on Sept. 22.
West Platte traveled to Lawson (1-4) to take on a squad who lost its first four games of the season and scored only seven points three times out of its first four games. The Blue Jays fell behind early and lost 54-27.
West Platte trailed 14-0 before having an offensive snap as Lawson started with the ball, scored, recovered an onside kick and scored again. The Blue Jays’ offense had some impressive moments throughout the night – producing its most points in a loss since 2018 – but went into the locker room trailing big.
West Platte had some issues stringing together any defensive stops as Lawson produced 436 yards of offense. The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 10 points in the second half, made a defensive stop and had a chance to make it a one possession game.
After being pinned deep in its own territory, West Platte faced a 4th down on the 9-yard line. The Blue Jays took a chance on a fake punt and were unsuccessful as the Cardinals put the game away with a score shortly after that.
Dominic Williams rushed in for three touchdowns for the second straight week as the senior ran for 102 yards and had one reception for 17 yards. Kane Cogan completed 14 of his 28 passes for 193 yards, including a passing touchdown to Blaze Masoner – who had a team-high seven catches for 99 yards – in the first half.
Since being shut out in the season opener, West Platte has averaged 30.5 points per game but has given up 43.5 points in that time frame. The Blue Jays will have a tough KCI matchup with 2-time defending Class 1 Champions East Buchanan (5-0) on Sept. 29.
