Along with a slew of routine annual bids, the Platte County Commissions last week approved an agreement that may help out one of its smaller communities and several bid awards for annual road projects.
At the Monday, March 4 administrative session, commissioners approved a long-overdue agreement with the Village of Iatan for its share of county transportation tax funds from the three-eighths cent county sales tax renewed by voters in 2013. Previous village boards of trustees failed to sign the agreement with the county, barring further village participation in the program. The current board, chaired by Daniel Schultz, has been working to rebuild the small community of only about 30 residents located north of Weston.
The distribution of funds to Iatan will be based on the village’s 2010 census numbers and can be used for some road or bridge repair or restoration projects in the village.
According to director of public works Bob Heim, the village would receive about $20,000 over the life of the current road sales tax.
Commissioners also approved bid awards to contractors handling the county’s 2019 road surfacing projects. Bids were awarded to Superior Bowen Asphalt Company, Vance Brothers for annual road resurfacing and to Terry Snelling Construction for the concrete curb repair program.
Roads tentatively scheduled for asphalt overlay are Northwest 89th Street, Northwest 194th Street, Northwest 71st Terrace in the Stonegate subdivision, Baker Road, Boulder Road, County Line Road, Hillview Circle, Lane Tree, Main Street in Waldron, Martin Road East, May Street, River Road in Waldron, Scenic Drive, Smith Road, Sunset Court, West Gale Road and White Pine Circle.
Roads up for microsurfacing are Northwest 72nd Street, Northwest 76th Street, Northwest 81st Street, Amber Court, Aring Road, Breckenridge Road, Brightwell Road, Caldwell Road, Calloway Road, Chariton Road, Diamond Court, Elizabeth Ann Court, Ellen Lane, Emerald Court, Emerald Hills Road, Fox Road, Green Glades Road, Hornback Road, Jade Court, Jana Road, Kara Lane, King’s Ridge, Kirk Road, Mastern Drive, Masters Lane, Mesa Road, Mohawk Road, Todd Creek Road and Woodruff Road.
Heim said the scope of projects will depend on the impact of the series of winter storms on the county road system. Some work may need to shift to tackle weather-damaged roads.
Vance Brothers also got the job of completing phase two of improvements to Interurban Road, from Camden Point north to Dearborn. The roadway will be microsurfaced and re-striped.
Commissioners proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and appointed Wendy Fife, Tanya Finn and Rob Willard to the board of services for the developmentally disabled. Commissioners also recognized the service of retiring member Dr. Carl Myers, who served on the board for decades.
The county also renewed its funding agreement for the Cyber Crimes Task Force, which covers a large swath of northwest Missouri and is headquartered in Platte County. In 2018, the task force received more than 320 cyber tips, initiated 274 new cases, conducted 332 forensic investigations, arrested 16 predators, conducted 23 juvenile interventions and more.
