Fernandez wins 100th career match to lead Pirates to fifth-place finish at Blue Springs, Park Hill South claims ninth place overall

Pirate senior 215-pounder Jake Fernandez earned his 100th career victory at the Blue Springs South Tournament when Platte County finished in fifth-place as a team with 292 total points on Jan. 28.

The Platte County boys’ wrestling team came out with a fifth-place finish and Park Hill South ended in ninth place in the Blue Springs South Tournament on Jan. 28.

Shane Leary was the only Pirate to come out with a first-place finish as he won the 132-weight class to help Platte County end with 292 total points. Leary moved to 15-20 on the season and made it to the championship where he pinned Wyatt Hines (Francis Howell North) in 3:47.

Caden Hulett (113) and Jake Fernandez (215) both finished in second places. Hulett had two wins by fall and a tech fall before losing on a 6-0 decision against Hickman’s Hank Bente.

Fernandez also made it to the championship, but before doing that, he won his 100th career match. However, the 215-pound Pirate lost only his third match of his 40 total matches of the season when Jacob Hanes (Pleasant Hill) pulled out a 3-2 decision.

Grant Fadler (126) and Darrell Smith (157) both ended in third places for the Pirates. Gabriel Wittel (106), Bryan Jennings (165), Cole Johnson (175) and Quinn Lightle (190) all had fourth place finishes, while Evan MacCuish ended in fifth place in the 138-weight class.

For Park Hill South, the top finisher was Tobi Falubi in the 165-weight class, moving to 25-11 on the season. Falubi had a pin and 11-2 major decision victory in his first two matches before losing by a 5-4 decision to Lee’s Summit’s Jackson Jones.

Buzz Kenslow finished in fifth place in the 150-weight class, Ethan Salt ended in sixth place in the 190-weight class and Mason Quarles claimed seventh place in the 157-weight class. The Panthers ended with 114 points, which was 10 points behind eighth place Blue Springs South.
