Field athletes bring home hardware to cap off the spring

Park Hill junior Brooke Boehm finished in fourth place in the long jump at the Class 5 State Track and Field Meet.

The spring came and went quickly for Park Hill with the track and field team having the most success.

Park Hill’s field events stole the show, with five of the six state qualifying athletes walking away with medals. In javelin, long jump and high jump, the Trojans didn’t mess around at state.

With two of the top-3 and three all-state high jumpers, it took a record-breaking outing by another athlete to outjump Desire Tonye-Nyemeck and Kendrick Bell. Popular Bluff junior Darius Graham set the Missouri record, collecting a gold medal and narrowly beating the two Trojans.

Tonye-Nyemeck was the runner-up, clearing 6-8.25-feet and Bell took third place with a 6-7.5-foot jump. Legend Freelon tied for eighth place with a high jump of 6-3.5 feet.

In only her second year long jumping, Brooke Boehm was an all-state athlete. The junior had a 18.7.25-feet PR, taking fourth place.

Jordan Rider qualified in the javelin and ended his legacy with a silver medal. His third throw went 178-1-feet, which was the second longest throw among all qualifiers.

Grace Hodge was the only state qualifier in the field events that missed the podium. She vaulted 9-01.75 feet to take 15th place.

The Park Hill girls also had an all-state relay team, made up of Jamari Ervin, Cali Richards, Alyssa Ball and Mackenzie Moretina. They took sixth place in 48.62 seconds.

Ball also qualified in the open 100 and 200 but missed out on qualifying out of preliminaries. Moretina ran a PR in the 100-meter hurdles at state, finishing in eighth place in 14.82 seconds.

On the tennis court, Park Hill had to reload with some younger, inexperienced players. Winning four of the first five matches and the final two of the regular season, the Trojans toppled Liberty North in districts before falling to St. Joseph’s Central.

Jordan Smith earned a silver medal in the javelin.

It was another losing season for the Lady Trojans’ soccer team, following seven consecutive seasons above .500 from 2015-2021. Coming off a 5-16 campaign in 2022, Park Hill had two more wins and three less losses this go-round.

Averaging only 1.6 goals per season, Park Hill scored two or less goals in 17 games but erupted for 14 in a 2-game stint towards the end of a 4-game winning streak at the end of the spring. Allison Estanich scored a late goal in the opening round of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament to take down Staley 1-0, before losing to the eventual Class 4 State Champion Liberty North in the next game.

The first year under Jon Davis, the Trojans’ baseball team had some highs and some lows. Starting off strong with a 5-2 record, the middle of the season wasn’t kind to Park Hill.

A 4-game losing streak where they were outscored 26-12 was what followed that start with the following eight games being alternated with wins and losses. Park Hill had another 4-game losing streak and fell short in the final two regular season contests, although it was against a pair of smaller schools.

A late lead in the opening round of the Class 6 District 8 Tournament didn’t last against Staley. The Falcons came out with the game-winning run in the final inning, eliminating the Trojans who finished 12-18.

Zach Cato was nearly an all-state golfer, missing out by five strokes. The sophomore ended in a 3-way tie for 32nd place with 154 strokes.

Baker Fredal ended his high school career with a 78th place finish with 169 strokes. He was a 3-time state qualifier.
