Jenna Winebrenner finally ended up on the top line.
Park Hill placed five players on the Class 4 Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state teams, released earlier this month. The Trojans versatile central defender made the first team for the first time along with senior midfielder Bella Catano.
Platte County’s Brooke Zenner made the Class 3 list for a second straight year.
A junior committed to Notre Dame, Winebrenner ended up with 13 goals (third for Park Hill) and 10 assists (fourth on the team) despite only occasional chances to join the attack. She also again served as the centerpiece of a defense that recorded 23 shutouts, helping the Trojans to a 25-4 record and a second straight trip to the Class 4 quarterfinals.
Catano came in second in goals for Park Hill with 18 to go with eight assists. She made the all-state list for a second straight time after appearing on the second team a year ago. Winebrenner had been a second team selection each of her first two seasons.
Alison Walls and Haley Buckholz were second team selections this year for Park Hill, making their all-state debut.
A dynamic sophomore, Walls returned from a torn ACL suffered in the offseason and didn’t miss any time, leading the Trojans in scoring (27 goals) and tying for the top spot in assists (12). Buckholz didn’t record a goal nor an assist but paired with Winebrenner in the center of a defense that recorded 18 shutouts in a span of 19 games to close the regular season and then in two district victories.
Park Hill ended up losing to eventual state champion St. Teresa’s Academy in the quarterfinals for a second straight year, and three of the Trojans losses were to the Stars this year. Park Hill ended up No. 5 in the final MSHSSCA Class 4 state poll.
Sam Paulak, Park Hill’s final all-state pick, finished the year tied with Walls for the team lead in assists with 12 and served as the midfield engine and solid two-way player. She also scored 10 goals despite missing a chunk of the season after suffering a concussion.
Zenner moved up from honorable mention to the second team in her second straight appearance on the all-state list.
A Missouri State signee, Zenner led Platte County in scoring (24 goals) and assists (10) and helped lead the Pirates back to the playoffs for the first time since making consecutive trips in 2009 and 2010. They ended a lengthy losing streak to Smithville in the regular season and beat the Warriors again in the Class 3 District 16 final.
Zenner and forward Destinee Smith (23 goals) formed a potent offensive tandem, and Zenner assisted the sophomore on two corner kick goals in the 2-1 comeback overtime win against Smithville in the district final. In a season filled with injuries, the Pirates finished 15-7 following a 3-1 loss to Grain Valley in sectionals.
