No late season injury could be enough to keep Jenna Winebrenner from deserved postseason honors.
For the fourth straight year, Park Hill’s senior leader earned a spot on the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association all-state list. She made the Class 4 first team for a second straight season after appearing on the second team as a freshman and sophomore.
Winebrenner led four selections from Park Hill with junior forward Alison Walls a repeat second-team pick, while junior goalkeeper Kelbey Emerson and junior defender Chais Wright made their debuts. The Trojans finished the season 16-8-2 and made a third straight trip to the Class 4 quarterfinals despite a series of late-season injuries.
No injury ended up bigger than Winebrenner’s fractured right tibia, suffered in the last week of the regular season.
Winebrenner’s final season included three goals and three assists from her central defender spot, a continued testament to her versatility. Signed to play at Notre Dame, Winebrenner finished her career with 31 goals and 25 assists while playing in 59 shutouts — nine of them this season.
Park Hill went 81-25-4 in Winebrenner’s four seasons.
Walls led Park Hill in goals scored for a third straight season, totaling a team-high 17 in 2017 to go with 10 assists. She now boasts 61 goals and 36 assists heading into her senior year, already committed to Drake.
Wright and Emerson were both honorable mention selections.
A starter in every game of her three-year career, Emerson posted nine shutouts despite Park Hill’s move into the Suburban Conference Gold Division — the largest tier of Kansas City’s best league. She now has 49 shutouts total and just 47 goals allowed after setting state records for shutouts in a season (23) and consecutive solo shutouts (12) in 2016.
Emerson also recorded two assists this season off of long punts.
Committed to the University of Kansas, Wright continued to develop her dual-threat abilities from Park Hill’s right back spot. She finished with six goals and six assists despite being more devoted to defensive responsibilities in wake of Winebrenner’s injury.
Now with 17 goals and 13 assists in her career, Wright established herself as an option on all set-piece opportunities.
Platte County senior Calle Boe made the honorable mention list in Class 3 after a second straight season in an altered role. Previously a midfielder, she moved to center back in response to preseason injuries in 2016 and didn’t leave the post.
Boe recorded one goal each of the past two seasons in addition to an assist this year. She helped the Pirates record 14 shutouts in 2017 — up from 11 in 2016.
Platte County finished 16-8-1 this past season after a 1-0 overtime loss to Kearney in the Class 3 District 16 title game. Boe helped the Pirates to a playoff berth in 2016.
