Go wassailing in Weston at new event

A new tradition is coming to Weston this week, mixing Weston’s own agricultural history with the fun of old world Christmas markets.

The Weston Wassailing Market will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 and Saturday, Nov. 30 at the historic Weston Orchard and Vineyard. The free event features wassailing, shopping, kids activities and more.

According to organizer Lorri Stanislav, wassailing is an ancient ritual where the community gathered to sing to the apple trees for a good harvest. It was done in the winter when they could prune the trees and the sap wouldn’t run. It eventually turned into a version of modern day caroling. Wassail itself is a drink made from hot cider, wine or ale seasoned with mulling spices.

While often known for tobacco and hemp cultivation, historically, Weston was also known for apple orchards. Very few survive, but the Weston Chamber received a partnership grant from the Missouri Humanities Council for the event.

“Event goers can expect Victorian carolers to lead them into the trees to sing the “Here we come a-wassailing” song,” Stanislav said. “Roaming story-tellers will tell stories and recite history about apples in our area.”

Shoppers will enjoy the Christmas market made up of artisan vendors.  Food vendors will be serving everything from perogies to knockwurst and potatoes.  Hot cider, hot chocolate, and hot wassail will be served. Kids will enjoy the carousel, animals, and various play sites.

A turn of the century St Nick and his wife will be on site to hear those Christmas wishes.

“The market and wassailing event has an old-world feel and combines the history of our area with popular holiday festivities,” Stanislav said. “After dusk, the entire market is lit only through holiday lighting.”

There is no parking at the orchard event site except for disabled parking (with placard). Attendees can drop off passengers at the top of the drive at the orchard.

Park in the upper or lower lots at the West Platte School on Washington Street, or park in downtown Weston and catch the shuttle on Thomas Street.
