Platte County junior golfer Ella Green is coming off two state appearances and an individual conference championship, being the centerpiece for this year’s squad.
Green tied for 30th place in the Class 3 State Tournament with 186 strokes, which was 11 strokes shy of all-state honors. Lily Ricketts is a 3-time state qualifier, after tying for 62nd place in her junior campaign.
“We have a mixed bag of players this year ranging from brand new to golf to seasoned veterans,” Platte County head golf coach Trevor Short said. “We’re excited to see the upperclassmen help guide our less experienced players throughout the season.”
Senior Mac Borland is the third and last returning Lady Pirate who was in the starting lineup a year ago. Platte County will look at those three golfers for leadership.
“Mac Borland has had many varsity rounds under her belt and will most likely see varsity time again. We have players who have had some success during their career at Platte County; Lily Ricketts and Ella Green have both gained valuable experience playing deep into the postseason. They are both multiple state qualifiers and have great leadership skills that will help the team reach our goals,” Short said.
Platte County had a deep junior varsity squad in 2022 full of players who are looking to slide into the varsity lineup, including Izzie Grell, Macie Garland, Danika Stephenson, Emma Mizell, Erin Anderson and Grace Handke. There are also some newbies showing off their skills early on: Adelaide Bonsignore, Brileigh Kobush and Isha Shippert.
“One of the aspects that makes our team different this season is that we don’t have a lot of rounds under our belt for many of the players. In years past we have had players who have been playing for many years prior to competing at the high school level. We are a fairly young team on the experience side,” Short said.
