The Kansas City Aviation Department released footage this week of the 2,167 pieces of steel and 172,000 square feet of metal decking installed since April at the new one-terminal Kansas City International Airport.
Drone and ground-level footage released includes a tour of the new concourse, passenger gate lounges, which will include the departure gates, seating and amenities and concrete flooring installed in June.
The terminal is going up on the site of the former terminal A, which was demolished last year. Expected to cost nearly $2 billion, the new airport is scheduled to open in early 2023.
At more than one million square feet, the project, dubbed Build KCI, is the largest single infrastructure project in Kansas City’s history. The new facility will open with 39 gates and the ability to expand up to 50 gates in the future. The new terminal will also include a 6,100 space parking structure, which will be constructed adjacent to the terminal building, a central utility plant and landside and airside improvements.
Led by the Kansas City Aviation Department, Edgemoor Infrastructure and Real Estate and Clark | Weitz | Clarkson, the Build KCI project is expected to generate up to 5,000 construction-related jobs. More than 150 Kansas City area-based partners are already at work on the project, including nearly 100 minority- and women-owned businesses. The project will be funded using 100 percent tax-exempt debt.
When complete, the new facility will replace the current airport’s aging terminals, which opened in 1972.
Subcontractor interviews will be held this week for the KCI Workforce Training Program for a class beginning later this month. An additional class will be held in the fall.
Applications are open for the KC Strategic partnership program to be held this fall. Small, local businesses can apply for the program online.
