Johnson, Riggs earn all-state

Platte County’s Karlee Riggs earned Class 6 All-State this season.

PLATTE CITY – In the aftermath of clinching another conference and district title, the Platte County volleyball team had nine players get recognized for strong play led by Kendall Johnson and Karlee Riggs earning Class 4 All-State.

Platte County didn’t lose a Kansas City Suburban Conference White Division match and won the Class 4 District 8 Championship for the second straight season. In all of Class 4, there were 30 all-state selections which includes Johnson and Riggs – who also were first-team selections in the conference and district. 

Johnson ended her career with numerous accolades, wrapping her senior campaign up with 307 kills, 232 digs and 37 blocks. Riggs ended her junior year with 262 kills on a 31.5 percent rate.

Tatianna Murray may have missed out on all-state but joined Johnson and Riggs on the all-conference and all-district first teams. On top of leading the Lady Pirates to back-to-back district titles, she left it all on the floor in her final year with 287 kills, 78 digs and 60 blocks.

The Wheelers were a big part of Platte County’s success this year, both making the first team in the Class 4 District 8 Tournament and the second team in the White Division. In their senior seasons, Jenna Wheeler finished with 349 digs and 51 aces, while Ava Wheeler led the team with 799 assists in addition to 211 digs and 55 aces.

Avery Walter was another Lady Pirate who impressed in her senior campaign, making the second team in districts and being an honorable mention in conference. Walter had 218 digs, 29 aces and 25 assists.

Ava Filger was a second team selection in the Kansas City Suburban Conference White Division and the Class 4 District 8 Championship. Filger had 223 digs and 261 receptions on the season.

Ciera Poldberg was a White Division Honorable Mention and Malin Cole was a Class 4 District 8 Honorable Mention. Poldberg had 86 kills and 35 blocks, while Cole had 85 kills and 76 blocks.

West Platte junior Arianna Nower was the only other all-state selection in the area, albeit in Class 2. Nower erupted for 326 kills, 125 digs, 47 aces, 11 blocks and 16 assists en route to making it to the first team of the KCI Conference and the Class 2 District 16 Tournament.
