Changing weather conditions may affect the taste and odor of tap water, but they do not affect water quality and safety.
Seasonal changes such as rain and runoff from melting snow can change the characteristics of the water in the Missouri River, the source of Kansas City’s drinking water.
Depending on each individual’s unique senses, some customers may notice slight changes to the taste and smell of our water.
KC Water performs continuous monitoring and extensive laboratory testing of the drinking water that is supplied throughout Kansas City to ensure that safe water is delivered to customers.
KC Water meets or exceeds all state and federal drinking water safety requirements as well as the high water quality standards established by KC Water on behalf of customers. This includes testing and treating water to help control taste and odor, although not all taste and odor factors can always be controlled.
For questions about taste and odor issues, please contact the KC Water Laboratory at 816-513-7000 or water.quality@kcmo.org.
