KCI Conference boys basketball roundup: East Buch beats Bluejays

East Buchanan outscored West Platte in the first half and held on for a 61-54 victory on Friday, Feb. 7 in a KCI Conference game in Weston.

West Platte accounted for 38 points in the second half, one more than East Buchanan in the same span, but couldn’t overcome a scoring disadvantage in the second quarter.

The teams were tied at 8-8 after the opening 8 minutes, but East Buchanan got 10 points from Idaho commit Ethan Kilgore and took a 25-16 lead at the break

The Bulldogs outscored West Platte by five in the third quarter, but West Platte accounted for 21 points in the fourth quarter. Miles DeMayo scored seven of his 13 points in the final quarter.

Three players scored in double figures for West Platte, led by Phillip Pattison’s 16. DeMayo had 13 and Sloane Portman added 10.

Kilgore finished with 37 in the victory.

Lathrop 94, North Platte 24

The Mules picked up a KCI Conference win on Friday, Feb. 7 in Lathrop.

Lathrop led 31-6 after the first quarter and held a 54-12 lead at halftime. 

Nathan Fine scored 23 points to lead a balanced attack for the Mules, who had four players score in double figures.

North Platte stats were not provided for this game by press time.

According to scores on MSHSAA, it is the most points the Panthers have yielded since 2008-2009. The previous high was 86 against University on Jan. 15, 2019.

North Platte 57, Excelsior Springs 28

The Panthers scored at least 11 points in each of the quarters and punctuated it with 22 points in the third and didn’t allow a point in the quarter in a game on Wednesday, Feb. 5 in Excelsior Springs.

North Platte led 23-22 at halftime before the 22-point third, which featured nine points from Andrew Hernandez. The senior finished with 17 points, sharing the team-lead with Cameron Leupold.

Plattsburg 60, North Platte 24 

The Tigers scored 39 points over the next two quarters to secure a victory on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Plattsburg.

The Tigers got nine points in the second quarter from Isaiah Graham and nine from Austin Stevens in the third quarter to build a 50-20 going into the fourth. 

Stevens finished with 18 points to lead Plattsburg. 

Jace Stubbs scored eight to lead the Panthers’ offense.

Lathrop 78, West Platte 54

The teams combined for 46 points in the first quarter but West Platte was held to only 15 points the next two quarters and couldn’t recover in a loss on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Lathrop.

Lathrop outscored West Platte 19-6 in the second quarter and then 16-9 in the third quarter to take command. 

Chris Moore and Nathan Fine had 15 points each for the Mules, while Zach Lucas and Nick Knight had 10 each.

West Platte got 13 points from Phillip Pattison, the only Bluejay with double-digit points.

West Platte 74, Troy 48

The Bluejays won a non-conference game on Monday, Feb. 3 against the Trojans in Weston.

Phillip Pattison scored a season-high 33 points, accounting for 27 of those in the second and third quarter. West Platte trailed 14-12 after the first quarter but Pattison scored 15 points and helped West Platte take a 33-24 lead. West Platte scored 21 points again in the third quarter — 12 by Pattison — to put the game out of reach. 

North Platte 70, DeKalb 62 OT

The Panthers snapped a six-game losing streak with a victory on Monday, Feb. 3 in Dearborn.

The Tigers were held without a point in overtime and four players scored for North Platte. Kruise Patch hit his sixth and final 3-pointer in the extra session, while Cameron Leupold scored two of his game-high 23 points.

Patch finished with 18, while Andrew Hernandez had 15 for North Platte.

The Panthers trailed 29-20 at halftime and then faced an 8-point deficit going into the fourth before exploding for 25 points and tying the game.

North Platte: The Panthers host East Buchanan (Feb. 11) and Mid-Buchanan (Feb. 18) with the road game to West Platte sandwiched in the middle.
