After 20 years at Weston City Hall, city clerk Kim Kirby will hang up her hat next summer.

Kirby announced her retirement at the Monday, Sept. 9 meeting of the board of aldermen, where the board authorized her and mayor Steven George to come up with a plan to find her replacement.

“I’m not retiring from working, I’m just retiring from the city,” Kirby said.

Her first day on the job was July 12, 2000 and she will end her career with the City of Weston on July 15, 2020. City officials hope to find a replacement next spring to allow Kirby to train the new clerk in the intricacies of not only her job, but also the city collector’s job.

“There are only two of us here in the office, so we have to be able to do it all,” she said.

During the budgeting process, the board plans to look into the expenses involved with hiring a new clerk several months in advance of Kirby’s retirement to allow ample time for training.

Kirby said she isn’t certain where she wishes to go after leaving the city, but will search for a new job opportunity starting next year.

Also at the meeting, the board put an end to discussions of allowing guests to stay in accessory buildings at bed and breakfast facilities. A property owner recently asked the city and its planning and zoning commission to consider amending its bed and breakfast ordinances to allow use of accessory buildings.

Board members agreed that buildings such as a detached garage was not built to the same standard as the home on the same property. It was not designed for sleeping quarters, but instead for storage of vehicles and equipment. Major building code variances and exemptions would need to be approved to permit this usage, and the city was unwilling to risk it.

The board also rescheduled the October board meeting to Tuesday, Oct. 15 due to the Columbus Day holiday and the November meeting to Tuesday, Nov. 12 due to Veterans Day.
