Platte City officer injured Sunday

A Platte City police officer was injured in an incident with a combative suspect over the weekend.

Danielle Edwards, 29, has been charge with three counts, including DWI, resisting a lawful stop and misdemeanor assault. Edwards was held on $20,000 bond, but has since been released and fitted with an alcohol monitoring bracelet.

According to court documents, a Platte City officer responded to the intersection of Prairie View and Running Horse roads at about 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16. A woman was reported slumped over the wheel of a blue Toyota SUV. The driver had run over a curb and was attempting to flee.

When the officer approached, he attempted to get the driver's attention by slapping the car window. When Edwards put the vehicle in reverse, the officer reached into the vehicle to try to get her to turn it off. Edwards allegedly drove off, with the officer's arm stuck behind the window pillar. A brief pursuit ensued, with Edwards crossing Highway 92 twice before ending up on the Platte County R-3 School District campus. The vehicle was finally stopped behind the middle school due to damage to the SUV.

Edwards continued to resist arrest and while officers struggled to handcuff her they smelled alcohol on her breath. She was unable to maintain balance and her speech was slurred, yet she denied drinking alcohol.

The officer was transported to a local hospital for a shoulder injury.
