After an injury plagued and sluggish start to the season, the Lady Pirates are in full stride with the postseason nearing.
For the first time this year, the Platte County girls’ basketball team (7-10) has won three straight games – two of which were against conference opponents. After taking down Kearney (8-11) and Winnetonka (0-18) in the final week of January, the Pirates matched up with a tough Class 2 opponent in North Andrew (15-8) on Feb. 4.
When the Pirates hosted the non-conference opponent, the Cardinals had won seven of their last ten games – including three straight – but Platte County pulled out a 40-32 victory. North Andrew fell behind early as Platte County knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening frame to take an eight-point lead.
Kiersten Robbins sank a pair of shots from downtown, in addition to one trey from Amaira Peterson and Morgan Stewart. The Pirates held onto their lead for the remainder of the night and sent the Cardinals home with a loss.
Robbins was the eventual leading scorer when she finished with 11 points, while Joslyn Hupp added eight points. After starting the season off 1-6, which included losing the first five games, the Pirates are nearing .500 with six contests left.
With the Class 5 District 8 Tournament coming up in the final week of February, Platte County will be looking to continue the strong play moving forward. The Pirates’ next opponent will be Lee’s Summit (7-10) on Feb. 9.
