Making history more accessible

Platte County Clerk Nancy Armstrong is leaving the clerk’s office more organized and digitized than she found it eight years ago.

Armstrong presented a report to the county commission Monday, Dec. 19 regarding her records retention efforts, stating 52 boxes of materials and 81 books have been prepared for donation to Park University’s library.

Records in their previous state in storage in the basement area of the county administration building.

“This is approximately one ton of salvageable documents, not including books, that will be available for research in their underground library,” Armstrong said. “Although there is still approximately nine boxes to review, the majority of documents from the earliest dated book of 1839 to present are now electronically recorded in the clerk’s office ready for cataloging for public use on the county’s website.”

Armstrong and her staff spent time identifying each document and book, determining their retention level and recording it or working with the state to obtain microfilmed copies.

The Frances Fishburn Archives and Special Collections at Park University houses several collections including Park College and University, the City of Parkville from 1944 and Platte County from 1838. Access to the archives is available to the community by appointment.
