A Kansas City, Kan. man is dead following an accident that occurred on Friday evening at Interstate 29 and Barry Road.
On Saturday, June 30 the Kansas City Police Department identified the man killed as Jorrad M. Davis, 38. The truck driver was the lone fatality in a multiple-vehicle accident.
Davis was driving a tractor-trailer rig southbound on I-29 when he pulled onto the shoulder.
Two Kansas City Police Department detectives pulled over to assist Davis, whose back door on his trailer was open around 5 p.m. Shortly after two civilian members of KCPD pulled over in a sedan to assist as well.
Davis exited the truck and was told to return to the cab but before he could the accident happened at 5:11 p.m.
A second tractor-trailer rig hit a black sedan driven by one of the civilian members, which was in the middle lane trying to slow traffic down.
The impact of the crash pushed the sedan into Davis, who died from the impact.
The front half of the black sedan was lodged underneath the trailer of Davis’ tractor-trailer rig.
KCPD said the vehicle in the accident was one of theirs.
“The detectives had instructed him (Davis) to get back in (the vehicle) due to the danger of all the passing vehicles,” said Greg Dull, the traffic division commander with the Kansas City Police Department. “Before he could get back in, that’s when the other accident happened.”
A press release of the incident from KCPD said department members suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
It didn’t specify how many were injured.
Interstate 29 was closed from Tiffany Springs Parkway to 72nd Street following the crash and didn’t reopen until 10 p.m. Friday night.
The ramp to southbound I-29 from Highway 152 was also closed in the aftermath of the fatality accident.
KCPD says the accident is still under investigation.
