Mayne and Holbrook hoping to lead squad to district title

Platte County senior Addison Mayne will be the No. 1 this fall after a state doubles appearance.

With three returning starters – two of which who made it to state on separate doubles teams last fall – the Platte County girls’ tennis team is searching for its first district title in program history.

Seniors Addy Mayne and Olivia Holbrook joined a pair of talented 2023 seniors at state a season ago. Platte County almost made program history last year, advancing to a district championship for the first time since 2016 in a tough loss to St. Pius X.

“We have our top three players returning from last year’s team that finished 10-7 and lost in the district championship,” Platte County girls’ tennis coach Zachary Keith said. “We are optimistic that we are better and more experienced and will once again compete for a district title.”

Mayne was the No. 3 in her junior campaign and will shift up to No. 1 this year. Junior Maggie McBratney will be the No. 2 and Holbrook will go to No. 3.

“I think we have a good amount of overall talent on our varsity roster – not that we haven’t had that before, but last year we had such a massive amount of turnover we didn’t really know what we were going to get from a few spots in the lineup. This year we’ve got enough returning players that I feel good about where we’re at heading into the season,” Keith said.

Filling out the lineup will be junior Jenni Summer, junior Lily Fish and senior Delaney Bachmann, in that order. There will be some adjustments for the Lady Pirates with finding out the best doubles teams together.

“Team unity will be key this year. If we’re all pulling in the same direction, staying positive, and pushing each other to be better, we could be very good,” Keith said.
