INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — One streak stayed alive and another came to an end during the Class 2 Sectional 4 tournament held on Monday, Oct. 14 at WinterStone Golf Course.
Park Hill South had a golfer advance to the state championships for the fifth straight year, while Platte County’s run of the same accomplishment came to an end.
Park Hill South’s Annie McFee and Abby Ervin finished back-to-back in the standing, tied at 13th and 15th, to qualify for the Class 2 finals that will start on Monday, Oct. 21 at Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar.
McFee and Ervin are both first-time qualifiers for Tracy Mangels’ squad. For McFee, a senior, it was a long time coming after three close calls in previous trips to sectionals.
She was one-shot away the previous three times, but this time she shot 94 and made the cut by four shots. Ervin, a sophomore, shot 95 after moving onto sectionals last year.
Lee’s Summit North’s Harrison Clemmons was the final qualifier with a 98.
Two back of that was Platte County’s Eden Shipp, a two-time sectional qualifier.
Platte County’s Bailey Silcott shot 104 and Park Hill’s Ishika Akula shot 108 on the par 72 course.
“The ladies had a rough round,” Platte County coach Trevor Short said. “They were close to getting through to the state championship, but we just didn’t quite have the scores to get us there. It’s good they are both young, so they got some invaluable experience and hopefully they’ll have redemption on their mind going into next season. I’m very proud of how both girls handled themselves this season being young and sitting at the top positions on our team.”
The sectional champion was Megan Propeck of Notre Dame de Sion, the two-time defending state champion, who shot a 2-over 74. Notre Dame de Sion and Liberty were the two teams that advanced to the state meet.
