Memorial Day services are planned in some Platte County communities next week.
In Platte City, a breakfast including pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee will be held from 8-9:45 a.m. Monday, May 27 at the Platte City Lions Club, 305 North Street. A Memorial Day service will be held at 10 a.m. at the Platte City Cemetery across the street. The guest speaker for the morning will be retired Colonel Andrew Schoffner, U.S. Army, who will honor military men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting freedom.
In Weston, the annual memorial ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at the Weston Veterans Memorial, located in front of the Weston branch of Mid-Continent Public Library. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at New Deal Warehouse. Lieutenant Colonel Perry Myles will speak at the American Legion Post 501. The City of Weston is working on achieving recognition as a Purple Heart City, and hopes to have the announcement by Memorial Day as well.
The South Platte Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7356 in Parkville will participate in a Memorial Day event at the North Kansas City Veterans Memorial, located near North Kansas City High School.
While not in Platte County, the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City has a weekend of activities planned. Admission will be free for veterans and active-duty military and admission for the public will be half price. Vintage military vehicles will be on display, visitors can access historic databases for free to learn their connections to World War I. On Monday, May 27, U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver and Kansas City mayor Sly James are expected to attend a ceremony featuring a musical performance and keynote address. The Platte County Courthouse and Administration Center will be closed for the holiday, as will Platte City, Weston and Parkville city halls.
