Miller facing murder charge following shooting

A Kansas City resident is in the Platte County Detention Center held without bond after a second-degree murder charge was filed on Monday, Feb. 17.

Darius D. Miller, 21, was charged in Platte County for murder and armed criminal action after allegedly shooting and killing Kirin J. Logan, 20, on Sunday, Feb. 16 in an apartment complex in southern Platte County in Kansas City.

The incident happened at the Northland Passage complex off NW 64th Street and N. London Avenue. Officers were called for a shooting report at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday and found Logan, who had a Kansas City, Kan., address, dead between two buildings.

The Kansas City Police Department said they responded to a call in the 6200 block of N. London Avenue and Miller’s address is 6233 N. London Avenue, Apt. F, according to court documents.

Inside a fanny pack near Logan was an electronic scale, a plastic bag with marijuana and a Kansas identification belonging to Logan.

Logan was found with two loaded handguns — one with an extended clip with 27 rounds — and two Mason jars of what appeared to be marijuana in a backpack and another near his body, according to court documents.

A search of Miller’s apartment turned up $720 in cash, two guns (a glock with one bullet in the chamber and two loaded into a 15-round magazine on the kitchen countertop), two Mason jars with what was believed to be marijuana and two spent shell casings on his patio.

Inside his bedroom, along with the cash was a .223 rifle and a bag containing apparent marijuana residue.

Eight spent shell casings were found on the ground under Miller’s balcony.

A witness, Miller’s roommate, said he saw a black male wearing a white jacket waving a silver handgun back and forth and heard shouting from the male with a gun, saying ‘don’t move.’

A sound of a door closing or opening and then footsteps on a stairway was followed before the witness heard gunshots.

The roommate saw Miller come back into the balcony, holding a brown handgun — matching a description of the one found on the kitchen counter top — and Miller told the roommate to leave the apartment.

Logan’s girlfriend stated he had on a white jacket and was wearing a black fanny pack containing a silver handgun when she saw him last at 8 p.m. that night.

Miller stated ‘I just shot someone’ after being detained but then asked for an attorney.

A text message from Miller’s phone to his mother said he shot someone at home after being taken into custody and transported to Kansas City Police Department headquarters. Also on search on the phone revealed a photo of Miller holding a blue-toned Glock pistol that was recovered near the body of Logan.

Incidentally, when KCPD first released the victim’s name on Monday it released Miller’s rather than Logan’s, but sent out a correction. Hours later, Miller was charged with the murder of Logan.

An examination revealed Logan died of a gunshot wound from a single gunshot wound that entered from his back, near his right shoulder blade.
