No quorum at tax advisory meeting

The county sales tax advisory committee was scheduled to meet this week, but was forced to cancel when a quorum of committee members failed to show up to the meeting.

The commission-appointed committee planned to meet Monday, Jan. 13 at the Platte County Resource Center. A previous meeting was relocated without notification of all committee members, but that was not the case Monday. Only four committee members arrived for the 6 p.m. meeting — two members shy of the quorum of six — with county auditor Kevin Robinson, director of planning and zoning and parks Daniel Erickson and several members of the media present. A fifth committee member was in the building but was in the middle of a presentation for another group with which he serves.

Committee chair Sandra Thomas held the space until about 6:15 p.m. to allow time for other members to arrive, but eventually canceled the meeting. It was tentatively rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 20 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The committee was formed earlier this year with the mission to recommend an overhaul of the county tax structure to the county commissioners. The half-cent parks, recreation and stormwater sales tax will expire at the end of the year, and commissioners have long stated they intend to reduce the tax before placing it on a ballot for renewal. A dedicated law enforcement sales tax is also on the table.
