Park Hill South just missed out on an automatic berth to the next round of the postseason, while Park Hill’s individuals did enough to keep team hopes alive.
The results were mixed in the Class 4 District 8 tournament held Monday, May 2 at The Deuce in Kansas City, Mo. Tanner Owen, Park Hill South’s Division I-bound senior, ended up tied for third with an 8-over 80, and interestingly, Zach Bischler matched his score to give the Panthers two in the top five.
Park Hill South wound up third in the 10-team field with a 346. That put the Panthers just two back of Liberty and medalist Sam Parrott for the second of two automatic berths to next week’s Class 4 Sectional 4 field.
In addition, Park Hill South’s Dillon Murray (96) and Tate Summa (98) were just off the cutline of 94 for the top 15 individuals not from the top two qualifying teams. Four qualifying individuals allows for a team score to be posted at sectionals with hopes of advancing on to state.
That’s the route Park Hill took.
The Trojans were in a three-way tie for fourth at 352 with Staley and St. Joseph Central, and all three put four individuals in the top 15 plus ties for players not from team champion Liberty North and runner-up Liberty. Kris Snodgrass (t-8th, 87), Tim Cation (t-11th, 89), Davin Dorrell (t-16th, 90) and Ryan Graves (t-22nd, 94) all qualified for sectionals in a bunched finish for Park Hill.
Graves grabbed one of the last two spots to keep the team season alive.
Class 4 Sectional 4 play will be Monday, May 9 at Cardinal Hill Golf Course in Liberty, Mo. Owen will seek a fourth trip to state looking to become the second two-time medalist in Park Hill South history, while Snodgrass will seek a second straight state berth after sneaking in on the cut line last year.
The top 10 individuals plus ties from non-state qualifying teams advance to state from sectionals.
