Panthers enter new age

Park Hill South senior Kiros Martin will look to have a nice winter of wrestling after doing well on the football field in the fall.

PARKVILLE – In a new season with an interim coach and no returning state qualifiers, the Park Hill South boys’ wrestling team enters a new era.

Park Hill South has a senior heavy lineup with five of the six returning starters being in that class. Glenn Rosario is the interim coach for this year only and has been around high school wrestling for nearly four decades.

“This is my 37th and final year as a wrestling coach or an official; I’m excited about the team and where it’s headed,” Rosario said. “We’ve experienced upperclassmen in Connor Jackson and Buzz Kinslow as well as two very good freshmen in Magnus Hoenshell and Landon McDowell. In addition, seniors Jacen Safly, Ethan Saft and our big man Kiros Martin will help lead us both on and off the mat this year.”

Along with the seniors, Park Hill South sophomore Mason Quarles is returning in the 150-weight class. Although none of the Panthers made it to state last year, many have the potential to reach that stage this season.

“We should have several wrestlers who can make it to state. In order to do that, we need to stay healthy and continue to improve,” Rosario said.

Jackson (144) and Kinslow (157) are in the lighter classes, while Safly (165), Saft (190) and Martin (285) are in the heavier classes. Colt Hollquist (106), Noah Keiwolterink (113) and Ziere Reid (215) are other players that will fill up the lineup.

“We’ve been focusing on getting into “wrestling shape,” we even hired a strength and

conditioning coach. With one wrestling room and three teams, we have to be highly creative to alleviate overcrowding in the room. The team’s working hard – and more importantly working smart – to achieve our goals,” Rosario said.
