Panthers preparing for postseason

The Park Hill South basketball team’s regular seasons are officially over with the Class 6 District 4 Tournament being next.

The Park Hill South girls will enter the postseason with a remarkable 23-3 record that includes 15 straight victories, matching the longest such streak in a decade. The strong play has allowed the Lady Panthers to clinch the top seed in districts, which hasn’t happened since the 2018-19 season.

Park Hill South has won every game by double figures in the recent winning streak and its only losses all winter are to top-notch opponents. The Lady Panthers’ last loss was against Incarnate Ward Academy (26-0), which is the best team in Class 6.

Park Hill South only has lost one game to opponents in the Kansas City area, with that being against Truman (22-2) – the No. 2 team in the state – in the Winnetonka Tournament Championship back in early December. The Lady Panthers were undefeated in the Silver Division of the Kansas City Suburban Conference and ended the regular season ranked No. 2 in the state.

Park Hill South will host eighth-seeded Oak Park (4-22) on March 2 at 7 p.m. and would play St. Joseph’s Central (16-8) or Liberty (14-11) in the semifinals at Staley High School on March 4 at 3 p.m. with a win. The Lady Panthers haven’t played in a district championship since 2019 and if they make it that far this postseason, it will take place on March 7 at 7 p.m.

The Park Hill South boys ended the regular season with a 15-10 record, and they earned the No. 5 seed in the Class 6 District 4 Tournament. The Panthers were on their longest losing streak since 2011 – coming up short in five straight games – but ended the regular season with back-to-back victories.

Park Hill South beat Liberty (11-14) 54-46 on Feb. 17 before taking down Lee’s Summit North (9-17) on Feb. 22. The Panthers ended with a 4-6 conference record.

Brayden Parra ended the season with the third most made 3-pointers in the conference when the senior made 41 on 90 attempts, good for a 45.6 percent rate. Cahmai Crosby had the second most total points in the Silver Division with 410, which is an average of 17.08 points per game.

Park Hill South will open the postseason with a road matchup against North Kansas City (18-8) on March 1 at 7 p.m. The Hornets beat the Panthers 81-73 in the only time they met in the regular season on Jan. 31.
