Park Hill hoping to bounce back

Baker Fredal is a 2-time state qualifier and is set to lead the Trojans in his senior campaign.

Zach Dorrell is entering this spring one year shy of being the Park Hill boys’ golf coach for a quarter of a century and is looking to bring the Trojans to a more competitive season than the last one.

Senior Baker Fredal is the top Trojan heading into this season as the golfer has qualified for state every year he’s been able to compete. With his freshman season being cancelled due to COVID-19, he qualified for state in his sophomore and junior campaigns.

In his sophomore season, Fredal finished in 75th place with 172 strokes. He improved by 10 strokes at state from his sophomore to junior season, ending in 42nd place in 2022 and will hope to be joined with a teammate this year at state.

“We finally have some depth, which could make the varsity very fluid and create some good competition,” Dorrell said. “Our depth from spots four to eight will be interesting to see how it plays out.”

Gavin Schaag has had success as a wide receiver this past fall on the gridiron and was one of the best shooters this past winter on the court as the junior is one of three varsity returners. Sophomores Zach Cato and Ethan Howell both were in the lineup last year and freshman Alex Magana has been competing early on.

“Zach Cato has improved a lot after his freshman campaign; Alex Magana is a solid freshman who has potential to go low; and Gavin Schaag is just a pure athlete. I told them you just need do your job, don’t try to shoot scores that you’re not capable of shooting and play your game,” Dorrell said.

Dorrell told the Platte County Citizen that ahead of the season the lineup is Fredal, Cato, Howell, Magana and Schaag. Senior Austin Nash and sophomore Gage Dorrell will be competing to make it onto the varsity course, as well.
