Tanner Owen added to his growing list of accomplishments and did so with ease.
On Monday, April 25, the Park Hill South senior carded a 2-under 69 at Moila Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo. to win the Suburban Conference Red Division championship. Owen — a Nebraska signee — shot his low round of the season and beat second-place Sam Parrott of Liberty by eight strokes.
Owen now enters the postseason with a chance to become just the second two-time state medalist in program history. He finished tied for sixth a year ago, one shot out of a tie for second.
After an early birdie, Owen ended up making the turn at even par following his first bogey on a three-putt from just off the green at No. 9. He then played his final nine holes in 2-under and avoided any serious challenge from the field.
Owen’s low round nearly carried Park Hill South to an unexpected team title.
In what ended up a crowded top four in the five-team field, the Panthers finished with a 344 to place third. They were just two back of second-place Liberty and seven back of St. Joseph Central, which took the championship on its home course.
Park Hill wound up fourth at 345, just one shot back of Park Hill South.
In addition to Owen’s all-conference performance, Park Hill South’s Zach Bischler earned honorable mention honors with a 15-over 86, missing the top 10 by just one stroke. Park Hill’s finishes were much more bunched with Tim Cation on the all-conference team with a seventh-place finish (83), while Kris Snodgrass (12th, 86) and Ryan Graves and Randen Plattner (t-14th, 88) were honorable mention.
Last season, Owen finished second in the Red Division before claiming the first tournament victory of his career in the Class 4 District 8 tournament. He has won three tournaments so far this year with hopefully three more to play.
Park Hill South and Park Hill play next in the Class 4 District 8 tournament on Monday, May 2 at The Deuce in Kansas City, Mo. Tee times are slated to start at 9 a.m.
