The Park Hill wrestling teams split a road match against Staley as the girls narrowly won 33-30 and the boys lost 49-24 on Dec. 14.
The girls competed first with multiple weight classes left open and forfeited since those matches didn’t have a player from both teams able to compete. Park Hill went down 6-0 early when Nellie Dantzscher (100) was pinned in 3:14, but Ava Myers (105) won by a 9-7 decision in the next match.
Staley added another six points on a forfeit, but sophomore Angeline Vargas got Park Hill back in the match with a win by fall in 27 seconds, making it 12-9 with the home team holding onto the lead. The next six matches were forfeited – including two double forfeits – before Eve Herlyn took the mat in the 155-weight class.
Herlyn added to Park Hill’s 27-18 lead when she won by fall in 58 seconds, but Staley won the last two matches on a forfeit and a win by fall over Bryanna Priest-Tapia in the 190-weight class in 35 seconds. The Lady Trojans’ next competition will be in the Wonder Woman at Battle High School on Dec. 29 and 30.
For the boys, the 49-24 defeat was the fourth loss so far in this season. The Trojans opened up the winter with a tough matchup with Liberty North when Park Hill was beat 48-19 on Nov. 29.
Park Hill lost 60-6 to Broken Arrow (OK) on Dec. 2 before the Trojans went 3-1 in the Park Hill Duals on Dec. 3. Park Hill fell to Cameron 48-33, but defeated North Kansas City 66-15, beat Oak Park 72-6 and came out on top 58-21 over Park Hill South on the day.
