Park Hill sweeps South wrestling

In the most recent battle between Park Hill and Park Hill South, the Trojans came out on top in a sweep over the Panthers in a wrestling dual on Jan. 18.

The Park Hill girls barely snuck past Park Hill South by a score of 37-36. On the boys’ side, the Trojans erased an early deficit to complete the sweep and win 45-24.

The boys match started with the 165-weight class and the Panthers started with a 9-0 lead.  Park Hill South’s Tobi Falubi (165) beat Mason Turner with a 12-8 sudden victory.

The Trojans earned first four points of the night when Jim Humphrey had a 12-2 major decision over Taylor Zehr in the 190-pound weight class at Park Hill High School in the matchup on Jan. 18.

Park Hill fell behind by nine after Ashton Kuhn pinned Elijah Franco in the 175-weight class in 34 seconds. Jim Humphrey gave Park Hill its first four points of the night when the 190-pound wrestler earned a 12-2 major decision over Taylor Zehr. Park Hill South had back-to-back wins by fall by Marcus Peters (215) and Kiros Martin (285) in 2:44 and 1:20.

Park Hill trailed 21-4 but didn’t back down, fighting back with four consecutive match victories. Trojan 106-pounder Mason Brayfield started the comeback when he pinned Wyatt Toigo in 1:27.

Erik and Ryan Egstad had back-to-back win by falls in the 113 and 120-weight classes in 43 seconds and 2:33 to put Park Hill up 22-21. Davion Seymour then had a 19-3 tech fall in 5:36 in the 126-weight class and the score was 27-21.

Park Hill South brought it back within three after Dylan Taylor had a 6-3 decision over Noah Johnson in the 132-weight class. Park Hill earned six more points after the 138-weight class was left open and then the Trojans put the match away with two more victories.

Park Hill’s 144-pounder Shad Hassan had a 9-7 decision over Connor Johnson. To close out the night for the Trojan boys, Ethan Vande Ven pinned Buzz Kenslow in 5:03 in the 150-weight class.

For the girls, there were only four actual matches with the rest of the weight classes being open. Park Hill South was awarded two more forfeits than Park Hill had, but the Lady Trojans were still able to pull out the match.

In the 110-weight class, Park Hill’s Celeste Robin pinned Park Hill South’s Stori Clark in 4:48. Angelina Vargas (115) gave the Lady Trojans another win by fall, doing so in 1:16.

Park Hill kept the win by falls rolling when Jaeda Stroud pinned Shayla Troutner in 1:20. Maddie Kubkick got Park Hill South back onto the board in the 145-weight class with a pin over Eve Herlyn in 3:24.

Next up for Park Hill after the sweep will be a home dual against Liberty on Jan. 25. Park Hill South will have a road dual on the same day at Blue Springs.
