The Platte County girls’ basketball team got the bad taste out of their mouths of an earlier home loss with a convincing conference win over Ruskin 70-16 on Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Pirate Field House.
The Pirates used a 34-0 run that ran from the opening minute of the first quarter until just over two minutes left in the first half. Ruskin jumped out to a 5-2 lead but then went cold for more than 13 minutes of the game.
The Pirates led 16-5 after one period and started the second period with some sticky defense that led to fast break points on the offensive end. In less than 40 seconds, the Pirates scored three consecutive buckets off of steals before Ruskin could set up an offense. Ruskin finally broke the run with a three-point shot at the 2:12 mark of the second quarter. Ruskin had only eight points at halftime and would match that total in the second half.
Three Pirates’ players scored in double figures, led by senior Addie Schlake, who scored 14 points, followed by junior Rylee Carr, who had 12 points, and senior Lauren Stone, who had 10 points. Three players that included Amani Harlin, Haley Schank, and Adde Ayers, each scored six points for Platte County. Malin Cole added five points, and Haley Barlow scored four points.
The Pirates improved their record to 5-3 and will be off for the holidays until Jan. 6, when they go on the road to take on North Kansas City before following that up with two road conference games at Grain Valley and Truman.
