The Platte County boys’ swimming team finished in 13th place as a team in the 86th Annual Missouri Class 1 State Swimming and Diving Championships at the St. Peters Rec-Plex Center on Nov. 12.
A pair of sophomores, Deacon Gutshall and Palmer Keith, led the way with performances that got them to the medal stand. Gutshall finished in sixth place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.02, while Keith finished in fifth place in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) with a time of 1:57.23.
Both swimmers also scored points in the consolation events for Platte County. Gutshall finished in ninth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:46.45, while Keith finished in 10th place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.64.
Two of the Pirates’ relay teams also scored points in consolation races. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Collin Burton, senior Carson Howe, Keith and Gutshall finished in 14th place with a time of 1:32.82.
The 400-yard relay team of senior Gage Jonkman, Burton, Gutshall and Keith finished in 10th place with a time of 3:27.17. Other individual performances included Burton who finished in 27th place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.94 and in 31st place in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.63 seconds.
Howe finished in 32nd place in the 50-yard freestyle sprint with a time of 23.45. Howe also finished 32nd in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.71 seconds.
Jonkman finished in 26th place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.88. The 200-yard IM relay team of senior Weston Grimes, junior Brayden Carter, Jonkman and Howe finished in 27th place with a time of 1:49.46.
