Pirates finish in second place at 50th Annual Platte County Invitational Tournament

In the 50th Annual Platte County Invitational Wrestling Tournament, the Pirates finished in second place out of 12 teams on Jan. 22.

Eli Rocha, above, got injured in the third round and was unable to finish the tournament in the 138-weight class after pinning his first two opponents in the 50th Annual Platte County Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 22.

Helias was the top-team when the tournament came to an end, finishing with 164.5 points. Platte County ended with 243.5 points, followed by Carthage in third place with 232 points and Smithville in fourth place with 222.5 points.

Caden Hulett ended in first place in the 106-weight class with a 4-2 decision over Smithville’s Reign Creech in the championship match. Hulett pinned four opponents and had a 6-2 decision win in the third round to help him reach the championship match.

In the 113-weight class, Justin Tiemeyer finished in seventh place and in the 120-weight class, Alexander Escaping-Filmer ended in eighth place. Draidan Chilcoat finished in eighth place in the 132-weight class.

Eli Rocha (138) pinned his first two opponents before getting injured and losing by fault in the third round. Rocha had to forfeit his next match to finish the tournament in fourth place.

Jared Parsons impressed in the 145-weight class when the senior finished in second place with three pins and two decision victories. In the championship match, Parsons lost to Smithville’s Alex Hutchcraft on a 4-1 decision.

In the 152-weight class, Bryan Jennings was the sixth-place finisher when the Pirate was pinned in his first two matches, before pinning his next two opponents, then falling in his last two matches. Ben McDaniel (160) ended the tournament with a 3-1 decision over Carthage’s Gabe Lambeth in fifth place match.

Trevor Scott (183) and Blaine Keuhn (170) were the third-place wrestlers in their weight classes when they bested four of their six opponents. Scott was pinned by Helias Catholic’s Connor Wilbers (fall 0:43) and lost to Oak Grove’s Brendan Griffin on an 11-1 major decision, before defeating Olathe North’s Matt Castejon in an 8-3 decision in the third-place match.

Keuhn was pinned by two opponents, then won by fall, won by a medical forfeit and won on a decision. In the third-place match, Keuhn defeated William Chrisman’s Nathan Campos with a 3-1 decision.

Jaydon Walls ended in second place (195) when he pinned his first five opponents before Oak Groves’ Zander Brinegar defeated the Pirate in the first-place match (fall 0:21). In the 285-weight class, Mar’quese Brown finished in seventh place.

Jake Fernandez was the champion in the 220-weight class with five consecutive pins prior to the first-place match. Fernandez bested Lenexa-St. James Academy’s Wade Spencer on an 8-1 decision.
