Pirates open season at Kearney Quad

Platte County brought home six first-place finishes from the Kearney Quad held on Wednesday, March 21, in Kearney, Mo.

The Pirates joined the host Bulldogs, Smithville and Excelsior Springs in what was their first meet of the season after the initial opener was rained out.

Four of the firsts came on the boys side. Brice Bertram and Nick Bjustrom had a hand in two wins each for the Pirates.

Bjustrom, a senior, won the 1,600-meter run in 4:49.20. That race featured four of the top five finishers for Platte County, as Jackson Letchner was third, while Evan Edwards and Blake Bjustrom tied for fouth.

Nick Bjustrom joined Bertram, Grant Dixon and Evan McPhatter on the winning 4x400-meter relay team that finished in 3:42.04. The 4x200 team also took first in 1:40.69 with Bertram running the final leg. Joining him on that team was Carter Utt, Cade McNicholas and Spencer Cupp.

The 4x200 relay team of McPhatter, Devin Richardson, Dakota Simmons and Robbie Noe was second.

Michael Smith won the shot put for the Pirates with a heave of 45 feet, 11 ½ inches, while teammate Dylan Montes was third.

Smith was also on the 4x100 relay team with Ben Meirose, Utt and McNicholas that was third.

Utt, a junior, added third in the 100 meter and long jump.

Bertram was the runner-up in both the high jump (5-8) and long jump (19-0), while Blake Reynolds took third in the 200, with Matthew Phillips finishing third.

Matthew Sullivan was third in the 3,200 and Carleton Hall was third in the pole vault.

On the girls side, the Pirates swept the pole vault event with Abbie Schwieder taking first with a leap of 8-6. Julia Jurgensmeyer was second and Jaycie Call was third, both jumping 8 feet.

In other field events, Addison Long was second in the javelin, followed by Halle Magee. In the discus, Shayla Kohler placed third.

Platte County also had success in the distance events.

Lauren Johnson won the 3,200-meter run (12:50.54) while Lindsay Johnson was second. Erin Straubel was second in the 1,600.

The 4x400 relay team of Karleigh Wise, PJ Curry, Hailey Luna and Aly Anderson took second. Quinlynn Sanneman, Sophie Zimmerman, Alexa Bergstrom and Sarina Bertram took third in the 4x100 relay.
