The Platte County football team (4-2) had one of the best performances in ages as the Pirates’ defense recorded historical numbers when they defeated Ruskin 62-0 on Oct. 1, and bounced back after losing their last game.
Platte County’s defense was on the verge of breaking the Missouri state record for the least amount of yards allowed in a game when they held Ruskin to -40 total yards in the contest. At one point the Eagles had -56 yards of offense, and the record is held by Lincoln Prep in 1985 who held KC Northeast to -46 total offensive yards.
The Pirates also tied their own state record with three safeties in the dominating victory, all of which happened in the first half. The Eagles only had two first downs in the game, while they were zero for 11 on third down conversions and were unsuccessful on all three fourth down attempts.
Platte County scored 23 points in the first quarter and 25 points in the second quarter to take a demanding 48-0 lead at the break. Ben McDaniel started the high scoring affair with a 12-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a safety and a 17-yard pass from Jared Parsons to Carter Salzman.
On the final play of the opening quarter, Nate Walls ran into the end zone from the Eagles’ 17-yard line for another Pirate touchdown. Following another safety at the beginning of the second quarter, Parsons threw his second touchdown pass on the night and Chandavian Bradley picked up a Ruskin fumble and ran it in for a touchdown.
After the Pirates led 39-0, Platte County’s backup quarterback Dylan Zimmerman came into the game and completed all three of his pass attempts for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns. The junior connected with Tristan Magusen for a 17-yard score with 4:42 remaining in the first half and Chandler Steinmeyer for a 25-yard touchdown with 9:25 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The entire second half had a running clock and Dayton Doll rushed in for a 1-yard score with 3:57 left in the third quarter for Platte County’s only touchdown in the period. Parsons ended with a perfect seven completions on seven attempts for 65 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Walls was the top rusher for the Pirates when the junior ended with 50 yards and a touchdown on the ground on five attempts.
Platte County will be back at home for its next contest for homecoming when the Pirates host Winnetonka on Friday, Oct. 8.
