Platte City is gearing up for its annual holiday lighting ceremony.
Main Street festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. with this year’s theme of Candyland.
Santa and Mrs. Claus along with Santa’s reindeer will arrive in Platte City just in time for the lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on the Platte County Courthouse steps. The event also features horse-drawn carriage rides, children’s crafts, children’s rides, holiday tours at the Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum, a balloon artist, face-painters and the Main Street Game with prizes for children.
The winners of The Citizen’s annual coloring contest will also be announced.
At the Ben Ferrel Museum, visitors can see the Fairy Princess from 5:30-7 p.m. and if one night isn’t enough the museum will be open for tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 7-9. The museum also has antique Candyland games on display.
The Main Street Game Board for children 15 and under starts at the Hop Shop Antiques, at 313 Main Street, where game players collect the first of seven stickers. Other stops on the route include The Farmer’s House at 3rd/Main; Miller-Donelli Insurance at 3rd/Main; JBLB Insurance at 233 Main; Pine’s Barber Shop at 221 Main; Flower Shop at 202 Main and ends at the Central Platte Fire Protection District station at 2nd/Main.
The board game turn in is at city hall.
The event is sponsored by Platte City Area Chamber of Commerce and Platte City Parks and Recreation.
The Platte City Civic Center will also play host to a free Breakfast with Santa event at 9 and 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. The pancake breakfast includes eggs, sausage, fruit and beverages. Free photos with Santa are offered. Reservations are required and may be made by calling Platte County Parks and Recreation at 858-3419 or visiting platteparks.com.
