Numbers released on Wednesday, April 8 show a continued increase in cases of COVID-19 in Platte County.
The Platte County Health Department confirmed 20 cases outside of Kansas City. Of these, 12 women and eight men are infected, most of whom are in their 40s. A total of nine people are reported to have already recovered from coronavirus.
In Kansas City North within Platte County, the Kansas City Health Department confirmed 20 cases. Neighboring Clay County has 56 cases.
While the Kansas City stay at home order took effect March 24, alongside stay at home orders in Platte and Clay counties, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson did not announce a state-wide stay at home order until late last week. The order took effect Monday.
Local and state orders will run through at least Friday, April 24. Extension is possible.
Also last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reversed course on its mask recommendations.
People are now recommended to cover their mouth and nose with cloth face covers when around other people. The masks are intended to prevent asymptomatic infected people from spreading the virus.
Covers should be worn when in public, such as at the grocery store.
The health department has acknowledged there is community transmission of the virus in Platte County and continues to state the importance of following the stay at home orders, social distancing and hand washing.
