The long-awaited taste of revenge finally reached the Platte County baseball team when it got vengeance for last season’s postseason loss to Kearney on April 27.
From 2015 to 2021, Platte County won 11 straight games against Kearney, but the Bulldogs entered the most recent matchup with three consecutive victories over the Pirates – including a 10-7 win at the 2021 Class 5 District 8 Semifinals. After a 6-0 shutout loss on April 4, Platte County got payback when a Devin Wassman solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Pirates over the Bulldogs, 2-1.
It was a defensive battle throughout the contest, with both teams struggling to find ways to score. Platte County left some runners on base multiple times in the contest – with seven hits on the day and only two runs – and took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Dayne Wimberly had an RBI single.
Kearney tied the game up in the ensuing inning, before going scoreless from there on out. Sawyer Allen struck out six batters, while Brayden Carter earned the win with two strikeouts.
For the first time this season, Platte County lost at home when Grain Valley (18-11) came to town and came out on top, 5-2, on April 28. The Pirates will look to bounce back ahead of the postseason, with the Class 5 District 8 Tournament around the corner.
